The Path to School: Plan’s Journey in Realising the Rights of Children with Disabilities

A film by Plan International Australia

“It is good for boys and girls with and without disabilities to be able to attend the same school

because if all of us attending the same school, we will be in a position to share ideas.”

Kapri, Sierra Leone

Plan International in Australia has produced a short film to raise awareness on disability inclusion for staff within our organisation. The film will form part of an online learning tool (Understanding Development Online) designed to increase the depth of staff knowledge and facilitate engagement on child rights and development issues.

The purpose of the film is to:

·         raise awareness on the rights of children with disabilities amongst Plan staff

·         demonstrate how Plan is supporting these rights

·         encourage all staff to consider disability inclusion within their work

The film focuses on inclusive education to illustrate how we can work towards realising the rights of children with disabilities. It prompts Plan staff to think about disability in relation to their role within the organisation and asks staff to consider how they can ensure Plan is more inclusive of people with disabilities. Tools and resources specific to each department within Plan Australia will be developed to accompany the film to practically support staff to strengthen disability inclusive policies and practices.

Plan International Australia is sharing the film within the development sector and networks as an example of awareness-raising on the rights of people with disabilities.

The film is 5:53 minutes in length and is the companion to the Listen Up! Children with disability speak out film produced to promote the rights of children with disabilities in international forums and provide a voice for boys and girls with disabilities in decisions that affect them.

Film made with the support of Plan Australia, Plan Ireland, Plan Sierra Leone and Plan Indonesia.
