47th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Communique
From Seta Macanawai, CEO, Pacific Disability Forum
Greetings from Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia
As the 47th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders and Related Meetings concluded here in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia yesterday, Sunday, 11 September 2016, we, persons with disabilities in the Pacific are truly thankful to our Leaders, the Specialist Subcommittee on Regionalism under the Framework for Pacific Regionalism, and officials of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat for supporting the submission made by the Pacific Disability Forum regarding the 2016 Forum Leaders Meeting.
I'm pleased to report that our submission and the issues it raised particularly the Pacific Framework for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, 2016-2025 were positively considered by our leaders at this meeting.
Interestingly, our organisation, the Pacific Disability Forum is identified in paragraph 24 where Leaders have tasked the Forum Secretariat to coordinate the effective implementation of the PFRPD and work with Forum member countries, CROP agencies, Pacific Disability Forum and development partners to mainstream the PFRPD at regional and national levels.
We have done it yet again and let's all celebrate this significant achievement. Let's also remind ourselves as we celebrate that there is still more work ahead of us to ensure that both the cRPD and PFRPD will have meaningful and lasting impact on our lives as Pacific peoples with disabilities in all areas and at all levels of our lives!
Please refer to paragraph 4 and then particularly paragraphs 23 and 24 under "Persons with Disabilities" section. For those using screen-reading software, I had no problem reading the document with JAWS.
