111129 AusAID Disability Action Plan 2011-14

AusAID is committed to providing a workplace that welcomes and thrives on diversity. AusAID’s Disability Action Plan demonstrates our intention to provide a working environment that is accessible for all, and adds to the diversity of backgrounds, experience and skills within the agency through improving the number and rate of retention of staff with disability in the agency.

AusAID’s commitment seeks to meet both domestic and international goals.

Implementation of the Plan contributes to meeting AusAID’s obligations under the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and reflects the Australian Government’s Social Inclusion Agenda and Australia’s National Disability Strategy. Among other things, these prioritise increased access to rewarding employment opportunities to improve economic security and personal wellbeing for people with disability, their families and carers. The Plan also supports AusAID’s Development for All strategy. This strategy articulates the agency’s commitment to extending the benefits of development to all, and to promoting the dignity and well-being of people with disability. An agency that is confident in managing disability issues internally will be better equipped to deliver disability inclusive development programs.

Delivering on the Plan will also meet Australia’s obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability, which obliges governments to provide people with disabilities with the right to work in an environment that is open, inclusive and accessible.

AusAID acknowledges that tackling obstacles facing people with disability is often challenging. But we are committed to addressing these within our organisation, and to implementing and integrating policies, practices and attitudes to become an employer of choice for people with disability.
